Book Club Discussion
Questions for groups reading Sunday at the Oxford Paranormal Institute.
- Despite her scepticism, Sunday has several experiences her rational mind wrestles with. Has something ever happened to you that you could not explain? Did it influence your beliefs?
- Sunday accepts PVault’s validity while also acknowledging the existence of inexplicable paranormal events. Are there areas of the paranormal you think technology may eventually validate?
- Dr. Baggins has credentials and evidence, but her research is dismissed. Ghosts Among Us has a fan base of blind believers. What does that say about who and what gets trusted?
- Sam warns Sunday not to end up like Emma and admits Les “ruins people,” but works for him anyway. What does the novel say about complicity that lets people like Les operate?
- Is Angela more ally or enabler over the course of the book?
- Sunday asks her mother, “Do you think we conjure things to believe he’s with us just because we miss him so much?” In what ways does grief or longing influence our willingness to believe without evidence?
- Ghosts Among Us stages hauntings around real tragedies, while Henry’s ghost tours are openly theatrical entertainment built around real history. Is one more defensible than the other?
- In both timelines, women judge each other across the generational divide, and the judgment runs both ways. What biases do the women in the novel hold about each other, and are there instances where this is resolved?
- Blanche and Miriam were women whose work and identities were overshadowed by Mimi’s stardom. Why did The Crown Theatre celebrate Mimi rather than the women who made her success possible?
- Were Blanche and Mimi more invested in stopping Cyril’s serial abuse or saving Vonnie? Does this matter to their legacy?
- Sunday leaves her last conversation with Mimi unsure if Mimi lied, deceived herself, or misremembered. Where else in the novel do characters choose an alternate version of events over an accurate one, and what is their motivation for doing so?
